2019- Paint Trends
If you’re into fashion you know that fashion trends are always changing and evolving from one year to the next. One year bell-bottoms might be in, the next it’s out…only to make a comeback a few years down the road.
Well, home design and decoration is much the same. New tastes and trends are always developing or inspiration being drawn from old ones. Whatever the inspiration, it’s clear that each year brings with it different trends in home improvement. Paint is no different.
Paint colors go in and out of style or become popular during different seasons. It has long been shown that colors have an impact on mood and emotions so paint manufacturers are always developing shades to visualize the emotions and lifestyles of their customers.
Neutral shades were really popular in 2018 but 2019 is all about striking a balance between neutrals and color. And as the holiday season approaches, it’s no doubt many people will be seeking to revitalize their homes with a fresh, new coat of paint. So let’s take a look at the paint colors that are trending in 2019 to help you make your choice.
Each year, popular paint brands like Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore release their color palettes for the year. They usually have a theme, taking inspiration from different time periods, lifestyles or even nature. This year, Sherwin Williams released a master palette of 42 colors, separated into six palettes of trending colors that work well together and complement each other when used in various areas of your home. There is something for everyone in each unique palette.
For example, the “Shapeshifter” palette may appeal to people who love the sea as it gives off a “beachy” vibe with different shades of blue and grey. The palette also includes a bold gold color that can be used alongside the blues or for an accent wall. The company said this palette was inspired by “spiritualism and healing energy”.
The “Wanderer” palette contains warmer, earthy shades of brown with a pop of deep blue. In fact, Sherwin Williams’ color of the year for 2019, “Cavern Clay”, comes from this palette, inspired by outdoor adventures, deserts and canyons. The earthy shades can work well with furnishings made from leather, wood, and stone—and is also a perfect companion for decorative plants like cacti, according to the company.
The “Aficionado” palette takes its inspiration from the early ‘60’s and has a nostalgic feel, according to the company. It contains copper and gold colors complemented by colors reminiscent of red wine. It may appeal to people looking for a regal, elegant finish.
The “Enthusiast” palette is suitable for people who like bold, bright colors. With bold red, gold, green, purple and blue shades, this palette is perfect for people who want their space to stand out. Sherwin-Williams describes it as being made for someone who likes to "embrace the details and create scene-stealing words that burst with beauty."
The “Naturalist” palette, as the name suggests, will appeal to people who like natural and nature-inspired colors. It contains colors like floral pink, leafy green and misty grey. This palette is suitable for people who love the outdoors as it brings a bit of the outdoor vibe inside the home.
Sherwin Williams’ “Raconteur” palette is inspired by deserts, safaris and spice markets, according to the company. With brown and beige shades, this palette will appeal to the adventurous traveler who wants to bring a little piece of the world into their home.
Benjamin Moore’s 2019 color palette is not as extensive with just 15 colors developed this year. It ranges from light whites, grays and corals, to deep greens and browns. Benjamin Moore selected Metropolitan AF-690 as its color of the year which it describes as “a stylish gray with cool undertones, and reflects the modern sophistication of 21st-century design”. It is a neutral color that can be paired with any other shade.
Another popular brand, Valspar, has selected a palette of 12 colors for 2019. It ranges from bright, almost-neon shades like lime green and citrus orange, to soft neutral colors like creams and grays.
Paint brand Pantone has chosen the color “living coral” as its 2019 color of the year. It is a vibrant orangey-pink color that can be used throughout the home or as an accent.
PPG selected “Night Watch” as its color of the year for 2019, a deep green that is also very versatile and can be used in any area of the home, while Behr selected “blueprint” a medium blue hue.
Apart from the colors chosen by the brands, there are colors that are just timeless and never go out of style. One of these timeless colors is white. White paint may seem boring at first glance, but plain white walls allow for other aspects of the room to be highlighted. Not to mention, painting a room white can make it seem more open, airy, clean and spacious. So if you are a simplistic, traditional person, you can’t go wrong with white or neutral grays and creams. You can always add a pop of color for personality.
Olive green is another timeless shade that can stand out or blend in depending on how you use it. It can be paired with neutral colors for a calming effect or with bright colors for a more fun energetic space.
Red is another timeless and powerful color that only needs a little to go a long way. It is often used for accent walls or to direct attention to specific parts of a room.
As you can see, 2019 brought a little bit of everything. Whether you’re into bold, loud colors or subtle neutrals, whether you prefer classic, timeless colors or a modern mix —you have many options from which to choose.
