Bamboo & Engineered Hardwood
A bamboo floor is a type of flooring manufactured from the bamboo plant. Bamboo has been used as an alternative for flooring because of its physical similarities to true hardwoods.
Manufactured bamboo floors are typically made available in planks with either vertical- or horizontal-grain orientation. The characteristic nodes of the bamboo are visible on the finished horizontal surface.
Bamboo floor manufacturers and sellers promote its strength, durability, its Eco-friendliness and its natural resistance to insects and moisture. This material is slightly more resistant to water damage, stains, and warping than hardwood materials, although it is still a concern. Bamboo is also relatively easy to maintain.
Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Engineered hardwood flooring is an exciting alternative to solid hardwood flooring. It is made up of layers comprising of a 100% natural wood layer on a plyboard base of multiple crisscrossing layers. The finished wood what you see and walk on is typically an exotic hardwood layer while the plyboard base is made up of less exotic fast-growing wood species. As a result, Engineered Hardwood provides an environmentally friendly flooring option with the top (slower growing) wood accounting for only 10-20% of the product. Engineered Hardwood is also known for its enhanced stability as the crisscross plyboard base restricts movement and provides dimensional stability beyond that of solid hardwood. This means that engineered wood flooring stands up well in areas with light moisture.
In terms of Installation, thinner varieties of Engineered Hardwood can be nailed down while the thicker varieties can be installed as floating floors. Floating floors are the great boon to do-it-yourselfers as it can be laid down over any subfloor with no heavy stapling required. This type of flooring is easy to maintain, however, care must be taken when using Engineered Hardwoods with a top layer less than 2 mm as scratches and dents cannot be sanded out.
